Common questions and tips from our work with Davie customers.
- What makes marine upholstery different from regular upholstery?
- Everything under the surface changes. Marine work uses vinyl with waterproof backing so moisture cannot wick into the foam, UV-stable thread that will not rot in sunlight, quick-dry or closed-cell foam that sheds water instead of holding it, and drainage built into the cushion construction. Regular upholstery in a boat will mildew from the inside within a season. Around Fort Lauderdale and Pompano Beach salt makes it worse, which is why we do not cut corners on materials here.
- How long do marine cushions last in Florida sun?
- Lifespan depends far more on material choice and care than on age. Quality marine vinyl with UV-stable thread, rinsed regularly and covered when the boat sits, holds up for many seasons. The same cushion left uncovered on a lift in full sun, never rinsed of salt, degrades dramatically faster. Stitching usually fails before the vinyl does, which is why thread selection matters as much as the cover material.
- Can you match my existing boat's seating and color?
- Marine vinyl comes in a fairly standard range of colors, so matching existing seating is usually achievable, especially on common whites, tans, and grays. Bring a sample or an offcut if you have one, or the cushion itself. Sun-faded seating is the tricky case, because the original color no longer matches the new material even when the spec is identical. In that situation we usually recommend recovering the matching set together so the finish is uniform.
Tip
Rinse salt off after every trip
Salt crystals are abrasive and hygroscopic. They grind at the vinyl surface and pull moisture back into seams every humid night. A freshwater rinse and a wipe-down after each trip does more for cushion lifespan than any protectant product. Pay extra attention to the seam lines and the underside edges where water pools and salt concentrates, since that is where failure starts on nearly every cushion we replace.
Tip
Check drainage before you recover
If cushions stayed wet underneath, the problem may not be the upholstery. Blocked drain channels, failed snaps, or a seat base holding standing water will destroy new foam just as fast as it destroyed the old. When you bring the piece in, mention any spot that stays damp. We look at the base and the drainage path during assessment so the new work is not set up to fail the same way.
